There are many diverse needs in the community of Peña Blanca, but through workshops with local leaders and with non-profit partners, we’ve decided to begin construction on a new preschool nutrition center. Beyond its obvious benefit, it will also double as a community center and location from which to pilot more capacity building programs!
This step will make the transition from home into school much easier for young children in the area.
We plan to have the preschool finished by the end of 2016 so it’ll be ready to welcome the Peña Blanca class of 2017!
The centers will ease 3 to 6 year olds into school. This is a difficult transition in any child’s life, and a critically formative stage. The children will participate in bilingual education and other programs that aid in brain development. This will improve their abilities to find jobs later in life.
The centers also give each student a nutritious meal and snack a day, daily vitamins, and regular anti-parasite treatments! The key here is instilling good health and hygiene habits early. This allows for powerful generational change and learning within the community. Watch this video for a brief overview of child nutrition.
Thank you to everyone who has helped us and helped our partner Mayan Families to open up this opportunity in Peña Blanca! We could not have done it without you. We look forward to continuing to create tangible and lasting change here.
The future’s looking brighter 🙂
